The ballpark in Omaha was loud enough to feel in your chest. It was June 2023, the College World Series, the biggest stage in college baseball. On the mound stood a pitcher who looked more like a linebacker than a ballplayer, six foot six and 260 pounds. He stared in for the sign. The crowd roared with every pitch, then held its breath for the next one.

Across two starts in that tournament, Paul Skenes struck out twenty-one hitters and gave up almost nothing, a 1.15 ERA over the biggest games of the year. LSU won the national championship. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the whole event, the best of everyone there.
